Vivitrol While Pregnant

Vivitrol® (naltrexone injection) is considered a pregnancy Category C medication, which means it may not be safe for use while pregnant. Vivitrol is used to prevent a relapse in adults who have abused alcohol or opioid medications.

During animal studies, Vivitrol did not appear to cause birth defects, although it did increase the risk for miscarriage. However, this drug has not been adequately studied in pregnant women. It is generally recommended that this medicine only be given to a pregnant woman when the benefits to the woman outweigh the potential risks to the unborn child.
