Vivactil uses are mainly focused on the treatment of depression. On occasion, however, the medication may also be used for treating fibromyalgia, bulimia, and anxiety disorders. These are all considered "off-label Vivactil uses. Since the antidepressant has not been studied extensively in people under the age of 18, it is only approved for use in adults.
An Introduction to Vivactil Uses
Vivactil® (
protriptyline hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of
depression (also known as major depression or clinical depression).
- Changes in sleep (sleeping too much or not enough)
- Eating too much or too little (and weight gain or weight loss)
- Having little interest in things that you used to enjoy
- Physical pain
- Feeling hopeless or worthless
- Suicidal thoughts.
Vivactil has been proven in large clinical trials to help adults with depression. However, keep in mind that many
antidepressants (including Vivactil) can take several weeks to begin working, although there is some evidence that Vivactil may work more quickly than other antidepressants. Sometimes, other people will notice an improvement in your depression symptoms before you do. Often, the physical symptoms (such as pain or changes in sleep) will improve first -- sometimes very quickly. It can take as long as a few weeks before significant changes in mood occur, so it is important to give Vivactil a chance to work before becoming discouraged.
