An Overview of Tyrosine Drug Interactions
Even though
tyrosine (also known as
L-tyrosine) is a natural product, it can potentially interact with some medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to tyrosine drug interactions include:
- Medications that contain levodopa (Parcopa®, Sinemet®, Sinemet® CR, Stalevo®)
- Thyroid medications, such as:
Tyrosine Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when tyrosine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Medications Containing Levodopa (Parcopa, Sinemet, Sinemet CR, Stalevo)
Tyrosine could decrease the absorption of levodopa into the bloodstream, perhaps making it less effective. In order to avoid this interaction, be sure to separate levodopa and tyrosine dosages by at least two hours.
Thyroid Medications
Theoretically, tyrosine and thyroid could have additive effects when taken together. Tyrosine is used by the body to make thyroid hormones. Check with your healthcare provider before combining thyroid medications with tyrosine.
