Thorazine Uses

A number of conditions can be treated with Thorazine. Uses of this medication can include the treatment of schizophrenia, acute intermittent porphyria, and mania symptoms in people with bipolar disorder. The drug is approved for use in children for the treatment of behavior problems, nausea or vomiting, and restlessness or worry before surgery. "Off-label" Thorazine uses may include the treatment of migraines, agitation, dementia, or neonatal abstinence syndrome.

An Overview of Thorazine Uses

Part of a class of drugs known as a "typical
 antipsychotics," Thorazine® (chlorpromazine hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine that has been licensed for the following uses:
 
  • Schizophrenia -- to help control schizophrenia symptoms, including hallucinations and other problems
     
  • Nausea and vomiting -- to help control nausea and vomiting, particularly very severe nausea and vomiting
     
  • Restlessness and worry before surgery -- to help calm those who are agitated or excessively worried about a surgery
     
  • Acute intermittent porphyria -- to help relieve the severe nausea and vomiting often associated with this condition
     
  • Tetanus (in combination with other medications) -- to help control muscle spasms associated with tetanus
     
  • Mania symptoms in people with bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) -- to help control manic symptoms (especially psychotic symptoms)
     
  • Hiccups -- to cure hiccups that have not responded to other attempts at relief
     
  • Severe behavior problems in children -- to help treat extremely severe hyperexcitability in children who become easily combative and explosive without being provoked
     
  • Severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children -- for short-term use only in children who are especially physically hyperactive.
