Side Effects of Thiothixene

In previous clinical studies, some of the reported side effects of thiothixene included a dry mouth, drowsiness, and constipation. However, most people tolerate the drug well. When side effects do occur, they are usually minor. Some serious thiothixene side effects requiring medical attention include a rapid heart rate, seizures, and signs of worsening psychotic symptoms.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Thiothixene

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with thiothixene (Navane®). However, not everyone who takes thiothixene will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate thiothixene well. When side effects do occur, in most cases they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with thiothixene. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of thiothixene side effects with you.)

Possible Side Effects of Thiothixene

Thiothixene has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and are then compared to side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, some possible thiothixene side effects included:
  • Drowsiness
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth (see Navane and Dry Mouth)
  • Blurred vision
  • Nasal congestion
  • Constipation
  • Increased sweating
  • Increased salivation (which can cause drooling)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Thirst
  • Swelling or water retention in the hands, legs, or feet.
