Surmontil and Pregnancy
Surmontil® (trimipramine maleate) is a pregnancy Category C medicine, meaning that it could potentially cause harm to your unborn child. Surmontil is used to treat depression.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant women but do show side effects to the fetus in animal studies. A pregnancy Category C medicine may still be given to a pregnant woman if her healthcare provider believes that its benefits to the pregnant woman outweigh the possible risks to her unborn child.
In previous animal studies involving Surmontil and pregnancy, Surmontil increased the chances of miscarriage and birth defects when given to rabbits and rats.
It is important to note that untreated depression in the mother may also be unhealthy for a baby. Therefore, Surmontil may be given to a pregnant woman if her healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the pregnant woman outweigh any possible risks to her unborn child.
If you are taking Surmontil and pregnancy occurs (or you are thinking of becoming pregnant), let your healthcare provider know.
