Surmontil and Dry Mouth
A number of side effects are associated with the use of tricyclic antidepressants like Surmontil. Dry mouth appears to be one of the most common side effects of the medication. If you are taking Surmontil and dry mouth occurs, you can try using a humidifier at night, avoiding drinks with caffeine, and chewing sugarless gum, among other things. If these suggestions do not help, talk with your healthcare provider.
An Overview of Surmontil and Dry Mouth
While dry mouth is one of the common side effects of
Surmontil® (
trimipramine maleate), the exact percentage of people who experienced this side effect during previous clinical trials was not reported. Dry mouth is a common symptom of all
tricyclic antidepressants, including Surmontil.
Recommendations for Surmontil and Dry Mouth
If you are taking Surmontil and dry mouth occurs, there are some things that you can do. Some of these suggestions include:
- Sipping water or sugarless drinks often.
- Sipping water or sugarless drinks during meals. This will make chewing and swallowing easier. It may also improve the taste of food.
- Avoiding drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and some sodas. Caffeine can dry out the mouth.
- Avoiding tobacco or alcohol. They dry out the mouth.
- Using a humidifier at night.
- Being aware of spicy or salty foods. These may cause pain in a dry mouth.
- Chewing sugarless gum or sucking on sugarless, hard candy to stimulate saliva flow; cinnamon- or mint-flavored candies are good choices.
