Now that Surmontil has come off patent, it is available as a generic medicine. Generic Surmontil is manufactured by Actavis USA and is available in two different strengths -- 25 mg capsules and 50 mg capsules. While brand-name Surmontil is available in the 100 mg strength, generic Surmontil is not.
Surmontil® (trimipramine maleate) is a prescription medication that has been licensed as a depression treatment. It is part of a class of medicines known as tricyclic antidepressants.
Brand-name Surmontil is currently manufactured by Duramed Pharmaceuticals (although other companies, including Odyssey Pharmaceuticals, have made it in the past). However, it has since come off patent and is now available as a generic.
Generic Surmontil capsules are available in the following strengths:
- Trimipramine 25 mg capsules
- Trimipramine 50 mg capsules.
Generic Surmontil is not available in the 100 mg strength (while brand-name Surmontil is).
Currently, generic Surmontil is made by one company -- Actavis USA.
All generic medications must have certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic trimipramine versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Surmontil.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than their brand-name equivalents. These inactive ingredients might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
