Prolixin Sexual Side Effects

When taking Prolixin, sexual side effects are possible, such as changes in sex drive or impotence. Because they are also common with the conditions that Prolixin is used to treat, it is unclear if the drug is responsible or not. In any case, if you experience sexual side effects with Prolixin, your healthcare provider may recommend changing your Prolixin dosage or switching to a different psychotic disorder medication.

 

An Overview of Prolixin Sexual Side Effects

Prolixin® (fluphenazine) is known to cause certain sexual side effects, such as:
 
Changes in Sex Drive
Prolixin is known to cause changes in sex drive (known as libido). In particular, the drug has been reported to cause an increased sex drive, particularly in women. The exact percentage of people who experienced an increased sex drive, however, was not reported.
 
Impotence
Impotence is another possible side effect of Prolixin, as well as many other antipsychotic medications. However, the exact percentage of men who developed impotence with Prolixin was not reported.
 

Will I Have Prolixin Sexual Side Effects?

It is impossible for your healthcare provider to know if you will develop any of these Prolixin sexual side effects.
 Also, if sexual side effects do occur while taking the drug, it is difficult to know whether these problems are caused by the condition being treated or by Prolixin. This is because sexual symptoms are common with a number of the conditions that Prolixin is used to treat.
 
If you develop sexual side effects while taking Prolixin, talk with your healthcare provider. He or she may be able to recommend treatment options. Depending on the severity of your sexual side effects, he or she may also recommend that you adjust your Prolixin dosage or try another psychotic disorder medication.
