Long-Term Effects of Preeclampsia

Long-Term Effects of Preeclampsia on the Mother

In an uncomplicated case of preeclampsia or eclampsia, there are essentially no long-term effects of preeclampsia seen in the mother. The mother is at no greater risk for developing high blood pressure (hypertension) in the future.

Long-Term Effects of Preeclampsia on the Fetus

The long-term effects of preeclampsia on the fetus and newborn are more difficult to predict.
Depending on the severity of preeclampsia, there is an increased risk for growth retardation and fetal distress.
