Phenelzine Dosing

When first treating depression with phenelzine, dosing generally starts at 15 mg three times a day. This dose is usually quickly increased to at least 60 mg a day. As soon as your depression symptoms are under control, your healthcare provider may decrease your phenelzine dosing as needed. To maintain an even level of medicine in your blood, take your dosage at the same times each day.

An Introduction to Phenelzine Dosing

The dose of phenelzine sulfate (Nardil®) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may currently be taking.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Phenelzine Dosing for Depression

The recommended starting phenelzine dose when treating depression is 15 mg three times per day. In general, your healthcare provider will increase your dose very quickly up to at least 60 mg total per day (divided into smaller doses). Some people will need up to 90 mg of phenelzine per day. Once your depression is under control, your healthcare provider may decide to decrease your phenelzine dosage.

General Information on Phenelzine Dosing

Considerations for people taking phenelzine include the following:

  • Phenelzine should be taken at the same times each day to maintain an even level in the blood.

  • If you do not take the medicine as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.

  • Your dosage can be taken with or without food. If phenelzine upsets your stomach, try taking it with food.

  • Phenelzine may not work immediately, although it may work more quickly than many other antidepressants. Try to give the medication a chance to work before becoming discouraged.

  • For the medication to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. It will not work if you take it differently from how your healthcare provider recommends.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to phenelzine or phenelzine dosing, talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking the drug without first discussing it with your healthcare provider. Stopping the medicine abruptly may increase the risk for withdrawal symptoms (see Nardil Withdrawal).
