What Is Paroxetine Mesylate Used For?

Paroxetine Mesylate Uses for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have recurrent, irrational thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive rituals (compulsions) that they feel they cannot control. Rituals, such as handwashing, counting, checking something, or cleaning, are often performed in response to obsessive thoughts or a feeling that something bad will happen otherwise.

Paroxetine mesylate is just one of several medications approved to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder. Behavior therapy known as "exposure and response prevention" may also be helpful for OCD treatment -- either alone or in addition to medications. In exposure and response prevention, a person is exposed to whatever triggers their obsessive thoughts and then taught techniques to help avoid performing their normal compulsive response.

Just like other OCD medications, it may take several weeks for paroxetine mesylate to begin working. In fact, it may take several months to know if this medication will work well enough for you. If it does not work well enough, another medication is usually tried instead. Therefore, it is important to be patient with treatment.

Unfortunately, most people find that their symptoms do not completely go away with OCD treatment. However, treatment may reduce symptoms enough to vastly improve the life of someone with this condition.

Using Paroxetine Mesylate for Panic Disorder

People with panic disorder have recurrent, unexpected feelings of extreme fear and dread that strike for no apparent reason, causing a racing heartbeat, rapid breathing, sweating, faintness, and shakiness. These "panic attacks" usually last around ten minutes, but may be longer or shorter in duration. People often feel like they are going to die or lose control during the attacks.

Many times, people with panic disorder live in fear of having another panic attack. This may cause them to avoid going places or doing things that triggered an attack in the past.

Paroxetine mesylate is one of many medications approved for the treatment of panic disorder. It may be used alone, in combination with other medications, or in combination with cognitive therapy.

It may take several weeks for paroxetine mesylate to start working. Therefore, it is important to be patient and give the medication a chance to work. With time, medications like paroxetine mesylate can help reduce how often panic attacks occur and how severe they feel.
