Precautions and Warnings With Paliperidone

There are a number of important precautions and warnings with paliperidone to be aware of before starting treatment with the drug. For example, paliperidone can increase the risk of diabetes or cause a life-threatening irregular heart rhythm called QT prolongation in some people. A few of the conditions you should tell your healthcare provider about before taking paliperidone include diabetes, seizures, and kidney disease. To reduce the risk of drug interactions, you should also tell your healthcare provider about all other drugs you are taking.

Paliperidone: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking

paliperidone (Invega^®) if you have:

Diabetes
Seizures
A narrowing of the gastrointestinal tract (such as a stricture)
Epilepsy
Kidney disease, including kidney failure (renal failure)
Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia
Low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension)
A certain arrhythmia called long QT syndrome
Heart disease, congestive heart failure (CHF), or other heart problems
Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives.

Also let your healthcare provider know if you:

Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
Are breastfeeding
Drink alcohol.

You should also be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you are currently taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
