Paliperidone Palmitate Dosing in People With Kidney Disease

The standard dosage of paliperidone palmitate for the treatment of schizophrenia in people with mild kidney disease is an initial injection of 156 mg. A dosage of 117 mg is given one week later, followed by a once-a-month maintenance dosage of 78 mg. This medication is not recommended for people with moderate or severe kidney disease.
 

General Information on Receiving Paliperidone Palmitate

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with paliperidone palmitate include the following:
 
  • This medication comes as a liquid that is given as an injection into a muscle (an intramuscular, or IM, injection) once a month.
 
  • The injection is administered by a healthcare provider in an office or clinic.
 
  • The first two paliperidone palmitate injections are given into the shoulder (deltoid muscle). Subsequent injections can be given in the buttocks (gluteal muscle) or shoulder.
 
  • For this drug to work properly, it must be used as prescribed. Your symptoms may return if you stop using this medication or miss a dose.
