Nicotine Patch and Weight Gain

The nicotine patch (Nicoderm® CQ®) is a nonprescription medicine commonly used to help people stop smoking. Although most people tolerate this medicine well, it is possible to develop side effects while using this product. For example, clinical studies have shown that an increased appetite and weight gain are possible side effects of the nicotine patch.

In most cases, side effects such as these are minor and easily treated. However, you should notify your healthcare provider right away if you are using the nicotine patch and you develop serious reactions, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat.
