Nicotine Patch and Blood Pressure

Although the nicotine patch (Nicoderm® CQ®) can be an effective medicine for helping people stop smoking, it is not suitable for everyone. For example, you may not be able to use the nicotine patch if you have high blood pressure.

The nicotine patch is applied directly to the skin and releases nicotine that is absorbed into the bloodstream. Nicotine can increase your heart rate and blood pressure. If you already have high blood pressure, the nicotine patch can make it worse. Stop using the patch and contact your healthcare provider if you experience an increase in blood pressure or a fast, irregular, or forcefully beating heart.
