How to Use Nicotine Patches

If you want to stop smoking, you may benefit from using the nicotine patch (Nicoderm® CQ®). But how do you use nicotine patches?
The nicotine patch is available without a prescription and comes in the form of a skin patch that is applied on a daily basis. Your initial dosage will depend on how many cigarettes you smoke each day. Your dose is then slowly decreased over several weeks, which helps reduce withdrawal symptoms and gradually weans your body off nicotine.
When using nicotine patches, apply one new patch directly to the skin every 24 hours. Do not apply more than one patch at a time, as it may increase your risk for nicotine overdose. You may wear each patch for 16 to 24 hours. If you experience sleep problems or vivid dreams, remove the patch before bedtime. If you crave cigarettes when you wake up, you may want to wear the patch for 24 hours.
