Nicotine Inhaler Dosage

Your doctor will recommend a nicotine inhaler dosage based on your level of nicotine dependence, among other things. A typical starting dose is between 6 and 16 cartridges daily for the first 12 weeks, with a gradual lowering of the amount over the next 12 weeks. Do not use more than 16 cartridges a day unless your healthcare provider tells you differently.

An Introduction to Dosing With the Nicotine Inhaler

With the nicotine inhaler (Nicotrol® Inhaler), the dosage your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on:

  • Your level of nicotine dependence
  • How well you tolerate the medication.
  •
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Initial Nicotine Inhaler Dosage Guidelines

The usual initial dose of the nicotine inhaler is between 6 and 16 cartridges daily for the first 12 weeks of treatment. It is generally recommended that people use at least six cartridges a day for the first three to six weeks of treatment, when nicotine withdrawal symptoms are the most intense.

Most people will need more than six cartridges a day to control their urge to smoke. Try to find a dosing schedule that works the best for you. Do not use more than 16 cartridges in a day, however, unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.

The goal of treatment is complete abstinence. Talk to your healthcare provider if you cannot stop smoking while using this medication, especially if you are still smoking cigarettes after three weeks of treatment.
