Mirtazapine (Remeron®) is a medication approved for treating depression in adults. It is thought that the antidepressant effects of this drug are due to its actions on serotonin and norepinephrine -- brain chemicals that become unbalanced in people with depression. The drug comes in the form of tablets and orally disintegrating tablets, and is available in several different strengths. Before your healthcare provider prescribes mirtazapine, make sure he or she is aware if you have bipolar disorder, liver problems, or epilepsy.
