Mirtazapine (Remeron®), an antidepressant that is available by prescription, is commonly used to treat depression. It works by helping to produce more norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain to help alleviate symptoms of depression that can occur when the levels of these chemicals become unbalanced. Mirtazapine is not suitable for everyone, however. Before taking the medication, tell your healthcare provider if you have liver problems, any allergies, or bipolar disorder.
