Methadone Risks

Although many people do not experience any problems while taking methadone hydrochloride (Diskets®, Dolophine®, Methadose®), this medication is not free of side effects. Some of the most common risks with methadone include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Lightheadedness
  • Sedation
  • Sweating.

If any problems do occur, they tend to be mild and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. However, there are some potentially serious methadone risks that require immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience serious problems such as seizures, chest pain, or difficulty passing urine.

Other safety concerns with methadone apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as people who have certain allergies (including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives). Also, you may not be able to take this medicine if you have certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease, a lung disease of any sort, or an electrolyte imbalance.
