What is bergamot essential oil? This substance is derived from a citrus fruit that is mainly grown in Italy. The oil is typically used as a flavoring agent in foods and beverages. In addition to its use as a scent and flavoring agent, bergamot oil is claimed to treat:
- Psoriasis, a skin condition (when applied to the skin and combined with light therapy)
- Vitiligo, a skin condition (when applied to the skin)
- Anxiety (when used as aromatherapy)
- Depression (when used as aromatherapy).
Preliminary research indicates that bergamot oil may be effective for treating psoriasis in conjunction with ultraviolet (UV) light therapy. However, there is insufficient evidence that it works for other conditions.
