Knowing Thorazine warnings and precautions before starting treatment with the drug can help ensure a safe and effective treatment process. There are many possible side effects that may occur with the drug, including neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, and increased prolactin levels. Also, certain people should avoid taking Thorazine, such as those who are allergic to any components of the drug and those taking large doses of medications or substances that cause significant drowsiness.

Thorazine: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking Thorazine® (chlorpromazine hydrochloride) if you have:
  • Kidney problems, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
  • Liver problems, including liver failure or cirrhosis
  • Breathing problems, including infections, asthma, or emphysema
  • Glaucoma
  • An enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH)
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives.
Also let your healthcare provider know if you:
  • Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Have an upcoming surgery
  • Drink alcohol.
You should also be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you may be taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
