Mental Health Home > Generic Narcan

Narcan (naloxone) is only available as a generic medication, as the brand-name version is no longer manufactured. These products are made by Hospira and International Medication Systems. The drug is available in two strengths and comes as a liquid that is given as an injection. The FDA has determined that the generic versions are equivalent to brand-name Narcan.

Can I Buy Generic Narcan?

Narcan® (naloxone hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to reverse the effects of opioid narcotic medicines. It is given as an injection into a vein, a muscle, or beneath the skin.
Narcan was originally made by Endo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Endo stopped making brand-name Narcan, however, and it is no longer available. Currently, the medication is only available in generic form.

Available Strengths

Generic Narcan is available in the following strengths:
  • Naloxone 0.4 mg per mL injection
  • Naloxone 1 mg per mL injection.

Who Makes Generic Narcan?

Generic Narcan is made by Hospira and International Medication Systems, Limited.

Is Generic Naloxone as Good as Narcan?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AP" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic injectable medication is equivalent to a brand-name injectable medication. All of the generic Narcan versions currently available have an "AP" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Narcan.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name drug. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
