Some people may wonder, "What is the methylphenidate patch used for?" The methylphenidate patch is used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents six years old and older (up to age 17). The patch, which contains the stimulant methylphenidate, begins to affect chemicals in the brain to produce a calming effect approximately two hours after it is applied to the skin. The methylphenidate patch may also be used "off-label" for treating narcolepsy, helping with weight loss, or treating adult ADHD.
The methylphenidate patch (Daytrana™) is a prescription medicine that has been licensed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
ADHD is a condition involving difficulty paying attention, sitting still, and controlling behavior. In children with ADHD, these problems are worse than expected for a typical child of the same age. Usually, the ADHD symptoms must be present before the age of seven to qualify as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The symptoms must also affect a person's school, work, or social life in a negative way to qualify as ADHD (see ADHD and School and Relationships and ADHD for more information).
The methylphenidate patch has been shown in clinical trials to help children and adolescents (up to age 17) with ADHD. The patch can help them sit still and pay attention in the classroom and improve behavior.
Although ADHD is generally thought of as a problem in children, teenagers and adults can also have the condition. The methylphenidate patch is not approved for use in adults (see Daytrana for Adults and Teens and Adult ADHD). However, it may be prescribed "off-label" for adults or teenagers (see below).
Any behavioral change involves a well-balanced ADHD treatment plan, including social, educational, and mental therapy (see Behavior Therapy for ADHD). If lifestyle changes alone are not effective in changing behavior, ADHD medications (such as methylphenidate patches) may be necessary.
