Mental Health Home > Varenicline Tartrate Drug Information

If you are trying to quit smoking, your healthcare provider may prescribe varenicline tartrate (Chantix™) to help curb your nicotine cravings. This product comes in tablet form and is taken twice a day (for the first three days of treatment, it is usually taken just once a day).
Although the drug is generally well tolerated, it is not suitable for everyone. Before using varenicline, make sure your healthcare provider has up-to-date information on your medical history and a list of your current medications. In particular, let your healthcare provider know if you have problems such as kidney disease, any allergies, or a history of suicidal behavior.
