Some people take tyrosine (an amino acid that the body usually makes on its own) in the form of a supplement. These supplements are claimed to be useful for many conditions, such as:
 
  • Depression
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Stress
  • Phenylketonuria (PKU), a condition that prevents the body from producing its own tyrosine.
  •  
Tyrosine creams or serums are also available. They are sometimes claimed to be beneficial for reducing wrinkles and other signs of skin aging.
 
When used as part of a specially designed protein supplement, tyrosine is effective for people with phenylketonuria, although further supplementation in addition to the protein supplement is usually not recommended. It is unclear if tyrosine is effective for other uses. Nausea, fatigue, and headaches are some of the possible side effects.
