Mental Health Home > Haloperidol (Haldol) Drug Information

Haloperidol (Haldol®) is a prescription medicine that is available as a tablet, an oral solution, and an injection. Some of the conditions it can treat include:

  • Psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia
  • Tics (including vocal tics) associated with Tourette syndrome
  • Severe behavior problems in children
  • Severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children (for short-term use only).

This medication works by blocking or lessening the effects of a certain chemical in the brain (dopamine) that can become elevated in people with these conditions.

To help ensure a safe treatment process with haloperidol, your healthcare provider needs complete information on your medical history, including any other conditions you may have and if you are taking any other drugs, including vitamins or supplements. This will help him or her decide if this is the right medication for you.
