Mental Health Home > Marplan and Breastfeeding

Because no research has been done on Marplan and breastfeeding, it is not known whether Marplan passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are taking Marplan and plan to breastfeed, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about the potential risks and benefits.

Marplan and Breastfeeding: An Overview

It is not known if Marplan® (isocarboxazid) passes through breast milk. Due to the possible harmful effects Marplan might have on the breastfeeding infant, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking Marplan while breastfeeding.

No research has been done to see if Marplan passes through breast milk in humans, as is common with older, less commonly used medications. Therefore, it is not known what the effects to a breastfeeding baby might be. Because Marplan is usually used as a last resort in people with severe depression, it may not be a good idea for a mother who is breastfeeding to stop taking Marplan.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider About Marplan and Breastfeeding

You should talk with your healthcare provider about Marplan and breastfeeding. This is because everyone's situation is different, and your healthcare provider understands your situation best. Based on what you want and expect (and your current health situation), you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about Marplan and breastfeeding in your particular situation.
