Mental Health Home > L-Methylfolate
Is L-Methylfolate Effective?Because L-methylfolate is the active form of folic acid, it will be as effective as folic acid. It may be preferred in people who do not fully metabolize folic acid (people with methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase "MTHFR" polymorphism). People with this genetic condition have reduced activity of an enzyme needed to break down folic acid to L-methylfolate.
Dosing InformationReasonable dosing recommendations are available for some, but not all, L-methylfolate uses. The recommended dose will vary, depending on the condition being treated.
Side Effects of L-MethylfolateL-methylfolate is generally well tolerated. However, higher doses may be associated with more side effects, such as:
- Sleeping problems
- Abdominal (stomach) pain
