Librium Side Effects

Although most people do not experience any problems when taking Librium, side effects can still occur during treatment with the drug. Some of the more common side effects of Librium include drowsiness, coordination problems, and confusion. A few Librium side effects are more serious, such as depression, hallucinations, and difficulty breathing. Be sure to contact your healthcare provider immediately if you develop any of these serious side effects.

 

An Introduction to Librium Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Librium® (chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Possible Librium Side Effects

Librium is an older medication, approved many years ago. With newer medications, the side effects are carefully documented, and the exact percentage of people that develop each side effect is known. With older medications, like Librium, the information on side effects is less specific, and exact percentages are not reported.
 
Some of the more common Librium side effects include:
 
  • Drowsiness
  • Coordination problems
  • Confusion.

Less common Librium side effects include:
 
  • Swelling or water retention (known medically as edema)
  • Menstrual changes
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Decreased libido
  • Unusual and uncontrollable body movements.
