Librium Dosage: An Introduction
The dose of
Librium® (
chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- The medical condition being treated
- Other medications you may be taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your Librium dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Librium Dosing for Alcohol Withdrawal
The recommended Librium dose for treating alcohol withdrawal is Librium 50 mg to 100 mg per day initially, with repeated doses as necessary to control alcohol withdrawal symptoms (up to a maximum of 300 mg total per day).
Librium Dosing for Anxiety
The recommended Librium dose for treating mild-to-moderate
anxiety is Librium 5 mg or 10 mg three or four times daily. For severe anxiety, the recommended dose is Librium 20 mg or 25 mg three or four times daily.
For treating anxiety and apprehension about having a surgery, the recommended dose is Librium 5 mg to 10 mg three to four times daily on the day(s) before surgery. Be sure to ask your healthcare provider exactly when to start and stop taking Librium for this use.
For treating
anxiety in children (age six and older) and elderly people, who may be more sensitive to the effects of Librium, the dose should be started at a lower amount, usually Librium 5 mg two to four times daily.
