L-Tryptophan Drug Interactions

When certain medications are taken with L-tryptophan, drug interactions could potentially occur. Some of these interactions can increase the risk of a dangerous group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome or may cause unwanted side effects (such as uncontrollable muscle movements and sexual side effects). To help reduce the chances of developing negative L-tryptophan interactions, talk to your healthcare provider before taking any other medicines with this amino acid.

 

An Introduction to L-Tryptophan Drug Interactions

Even though
 L-tryptophan (also known as tryptophan) is a natural product, it can potentially interact with some medicines. Some of these medicines that may lead to L-tryptophan interactions include:
 

 

 

  • Meperidine (Demerol®)
     
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including:
