Is L-Methylfolate Effective?

Because L-methylfolate is the active form of folic acid, it will be as effective as folic acid. It may be preferred in people who do not fully metabolize folic acid (people with methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase "MTHFR" polymorphism). People with this genetic condition have reduced activity of an enzyme needed to break down folic acid to L-methylfolate.
L-methylfolate is effective at treating an L-methylfolate or folate deficiency in people who do not receive sufficient folate from their diet. It is also effective at treating certain types of anemia and in preventing complications of pregnancy, including neural tube defects and cleft palate. As mentioned, it may also be useful for improving the effectiveness of antidepressants (see Does L-Methylfolate Work? for more information).
