L-Methylfolate Drug Interactions

More Detail on L-Methylfolate Drug Interactions

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when L-methylfolate is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Bile Acid Sequestrant Medications
Bile acid sequestrant medications may decrease the absorption of L-methylfolate into the bloodstream, possibly making it less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Taking L-methylfolate one hour before or four to six hours after taking a bile acid sequestrant may decrease the risk for this interaction.

Certain Anti-Seizure Medications
L-methylfolate can decrease blood levels of certain anti-seizure medications (sometimes called anti-epileptic medications), possibly increasing the risk for seizures. In addition, some anti-seizure medications may decrease folic acid levels. Because L-methylfolate is a form of folic acid, this could make L-methylfolate less effective.

Talk to your healthcare provider before taking L-methylfolate with an anti-seizure medicine. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely and adjust the dose of your seizure medicine if necessary.

Pyrimethamine
L-methylfolate may decrease the effectiveness of pyrimethamine when it is used to treat parasitic infections. If you take L-methylfolate with pyrimethamine, your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely to make sure pyrimethamine is effectively treating your infection.

Sulfasalazine
Sulfasalazine may decrease the amount of L-methylfolate absorbed into the bloodstream, potentially decreasing its effectiveness. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medicines together. Taking L-methylfolate one hour before or four hours after sulfasalazine may decrease the risk for this interaction.
