L-Methylfolate Dosage

Dosing Guidelines for Depression

L-methylfolate is used as a nutritional supplement in people with depression and low folate levels. Deplin is a medical food that contains L-methylfolate and is approved for this use. The recommended dosage is one 7.5-mg tablet or one 15-mg tablet once a day.
It is important to keep in mind that depression is a serious medical condition and should be treated by a healthcare provider. Neither L-methylfolate nor Deplin are antidepressants.

Dosing for Other Uses

Because L-methylfolate is the active form of folic acid, it is reasonable to assume that it would have the same uses as folic acid. Although there are no standard recommended L-methylfolate dosages for other uses, doses approximately equal to folic acid doses could be used.

General Information on Taking L-Methylfolate

Some considerations to keep in mind while taking this supplement include the following:
  • L-methylfolate is most commonly available as tablets and capsules, and is typically taken by mouth once or twice daily.
  • Some products contain high doses of L-methylfolate. Make sure to talk to your healthcare provider before taking high doses of this vitamin.
  • You can generally take L-methylfolate with food or on an empty stomach. Try taking it with food if it bothers your stomach. Also, follow the instructions for your particular product.
  • Be aware that some L-methylfolate supplements contain several other active ingredients in addition to L-methylfolate. This may be important when considering an appropriate dosage.
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate vitamins and supplements to the same extent as prescription medications. Therefore, the strength and purity of products cannot be guaranteed. Some manufacturers are more reliable and trustworthy than others. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist may be able to help recommend a reputable manufacturer for you.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to dosing with L-methylfolate, please talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
