Inositol Drug Interactions

Several medications may potentially cause inositol drug interactions, including lithium, divalproex, valproic acid, and carbamazepine. These medicines could lower inositol levels in the brain, so you should probably avoid combining these products until more information is available. To help prevent negative inositol interactions, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider before taking any other medications.

Carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Epitol, Equetro, Tegretol)
Carbamazepine may lower inositol levels in the brain (but not in the rest of the body). However, it is theorized that this effect might be necessary for carbamazepine to work (although much more research is necessary to confirm this). Until more information is available, you should probably not combine carbamazepine with inositol, as this could make carbamazepine less effective. If you decide to take them together, be sure to do so with your healthcare provider's approval and supervision.
 
Divalproex (Depakote, Depakote ER)
Divalproex may lower inositol levels in the brain (but not in the rest of the body). However, it is theorized that this effect might be necessary for divalproex to work (although much more research is necessary to confirm this). Until more information is available, you should probably not combine divalproex with inositol, as this could make divalproex less effective. If you decide to take them together, be sure to do so with your healthcare provider's approval and supervision.
