Ginseng Dosage

An Introduction to Ginseng Dosage

It is important to note that unlike medications (for which the standard doses have been well established), there is less information for determining the best dose for supplements, including ginseng.
 
This article refers to Panax ginseng (also known as Asian ginseng, Chinese ginseng, and Korean ginseng). This type of ginseng should not be confused with American ginseng or Siberian ginseng, which are entirely different herbs.

This means that it has been tested to make sure that the supplement contains a certain specified amount of ginsenosides (some of the active components in ginseng). Unstandardized supplements may contain vastly different amounts of ginsenosides, even if the overall dose of ginseng is the same.

It is a good idea to look for the "USP" symbol, since this means that the supplement has been tested and contains the right ingredients in the right amounts (there have been reports that many ginseng supplements actually contain little or no ginseng). Reputable manufacturers are more likely to consistently standardize their products.
