Drug Interactions With Fluvoxamine CR

Fluvoxamine CR and Serotonin Syndrome

Several of the known interactions with fluvoxamine CR are related to a potentially dangerous group of symptoms known as serotonin syndrome. Such symptoms might include:

  • Confusion
  • Hallucination
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Feeling faint
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Muscle spasm
  • Difficulty walking
  • Diarrhea.

Serotonin syndrome usually occurs when people take more than one medication that affects serotonin at the same time. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. In many cases, such combinations are still recommended, although with more careful monitoring. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be dangerous.

More Information on Interactions With Fluvoxamine CR

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when fluvoxamine CR is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alosetron (Lotronex)
Taking alosetron and fluvoxamine CR together can greatly increase the level of alosetron in your blood, possibly increasing your risk of side effects. These two medications should not be taken together.

Antipsychotic Medications
Combining fluvoxamine CR with antipsychotic medications may increase your risk of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). Symptoms of NMS include:

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you are having symptoms of NMS. Fluvoxamine CR and thioridazine should never be taken together, due to the risk of dangerous side effects.
