Elavil® (amitriptyline hydrochloride) is a prescription drug approved for the treatment of depression. It belongs to a class of medications called tricyclic antidepressants, which work by affecting serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain. Elavil comes in tablet form and is available in six different strengths. Before your healthcare provider prescribes you this antidepressant, make sure to let him or her know if you are pregnant, drink alcohol frequently, or have bipolar disorder (or a family history of bipolar disorder).
