Desyrel Drug Interactions
Desyrel and Serotonin SyndromeSeveral of the known interactions with Desyrel are related to a potentially dangerous group of symptoms known as serotonin syndrome. Such symptoms might include:
- Fast heartbeat
- Feeling faint
- Muscle spasm
- Difficulty walking
Serotonin syndrome usually occurs when people take more than one medication that affects serotonin at the same time. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. In many cases, such combinations are still recommended, although with more careful monitoring. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be dangerous.
More Details on Drug Interactions With DesyrelThe following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Desyrel is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Combining Desyrel with medications that "thin" the blood (medications with anticoagulant or antiplatelet properties) could increase the risk of bleeding. Check with your healthcare provider before taking Desyrel with any of these medications.
Additionally, Desyrel may interact unpredictably with warfarin.
Blood Pressure MedicationsSometimes, combining Desyrel with a high blood pressure medication may cause low blood pressure (hypotension). Watch for symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting. In some cases, your healthcare provider might need to lower the dosage of your blood pressure medication.
Because combining Desyrel with buspirone may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
Desyrel is broken down (metabolized) by certain enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Medications known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors slow down these enzymes, potentially leading to high levels of Desyrel in the bloodstream, perhaps increasing the risk of side effects. Check with your healthcare provider before combining such medications. In some cases, a lower-than-normal Desyrel dosage may be necessary.
