Several other antipsychotic medications are used in the treatment of schizophrenia. These medications are generally divided into two categories -- typical (also called conventional) antipsychotics, which are the older medicines, and atypical (or second-generation) antipsychotics, which are the newer medicines.
Other atypical antipsychotic medications include:
- Aripiprazole (Abilify®)
- Asenapine (Saphris®)
- Olanzapine (Zyprexa®, Symbyax®)
- Paliperidone (Invega®)
- Quetiapine (Seroquel®, Seroquel XR®)
- Risperidone (Risperdal®)
- Ziprasidone (Geodon®).
Examples of conventional antipsychotics used to treat schizophrenia include haloperidol (Haldol®), chlorpromazine (Thorazine®), and thioridazine (Mellaril®).
