Chasteberry Safety

Some people may have concerns about the safety of chasteberry. Before using chasteberry medicinally, it is important to understand that this herbal supplement is not closely regulated like prescription or non-prescription drugs. Therefore, chasteberry can be sold without any proof that it is safe or effective. Other safety concerns include the potential dangers of using this supplement if you have hormone-sensitive conditions, such as cancer, uterine fibroids, or endometriosis.

Is Chasteberry Safe? -- An Overview

When used appropriately,
 chasteberry (vitex) is probably safe for many people. However, some people may be more likely to experience problems due to chasteberry. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking it if you have:
 
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions, such as:

 

    • Cancer
    • Uterine fibroids
    • Endometriosis

 

  • Infertility
  • Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
     
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
     
You should also make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
