Generic Campral

Generic Campral (acamprosate) is available in the form of 333-mg tablets. The FDA has assigned the generic versions an "AB" rating, meaning they are considered equivalent to the brand-name medication. However, generic medications may contain different inactive ingredients than the brand-name drug.

Generic Campral: An Overview

Campral® (acamprosate calcium) is a prescription medication approved to treat alcohol dependence. It is intended for use by people who have gone through detoxification ("detox") and who are in therapy. Studies have shown that Campral can help people stay sober once they have stopped drinking.
Brand-name Campral is made by Merck Santé s.a.s. for Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc. However, the medication is also available in generic form.

Availability of Generic Campral

Generic Campral is available in one strength: Acamprosate 333 mg tablets. It is made by manufacturers such as:
  • Glenmark Generics
  • Inwood Laboratories, Inc.
The version made by Inwood Laboratories is actually an "authorized generic," meaning it is the actual brand-name medication that is just packaged and sold under a generic name. It is exactly the same as Campral in every way (it is even made by the brand-name manufacturer), except it comes in a bottle with a generic name.

Is Generic Acamprosate as Good as Campral?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Campral versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Campral.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
