Campral® (acamprosate calcium) is a prescription drug approved to help people abstain from alcohol. It is not exactly clear how this medication works, but it may help balance certain chemicals in the brain that have been disrupted by long-term alcohol use. Campral comes in the form of a delayed-release tablet and is generally taken three times a day. Common side effects seen with this drug include itching, diarrhea, and nausea.
