Bergamot Oil Side Effects

Although it seems like a harmless substance, bergamot oil can cause side effects when it is applied to the skin. Some of these bergamot oil side effects may include blisters, sensitivity to the sun, and scab formations. Notify your healthcare provider if you develop any of these side effects, or if something "just does not seem right." If the side effects are particularly serious or interesting, your healthcare provider may want to report them.

 

Does Bergamot Oil Cause Side Effects?

Bergamot oil is an essential oil that is used in a variety of ways. It is used as a flavoring agent in foods and beverages, as a scent in various products (such as cosmetics), and as aromatherapy oil. When bergamot oil is applied to the skin, it may cause certain side effects.

Possible Side Effects of Bergamot Oil

If bergamot oil is applied to the skin, it may cause side effects, such as:
 
  • Photosensitization (sensitivity to the sun)
  • Redness
  • Blisters
  • Scab formations
  • Changes in skin pigment.
     
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects that you think may be related to bergamot oil. Your healthcare provider will likely be interested in such bergamot oil side effects and may even want to report such side effects (especially if the side effects are particularly serious or interesting). You should also let your healthcare provider know if you develop something that "just does not seem right." While it may not be a side effect of bergamot oil, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
