Aripiprazole ER Injection Side Effects

In clinical trials, some of the most commonly reported aripiprazole ER injection side effects included restlessness, agitation, and headaches. Most reactions to this drug are minor and don't require medical attention. However, notify your healthcare provider immediately if you develop any serious problems, such as uncontrollable body movements, a rapid heartbeat, or weight gain.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Aripiprazole ER Injection

Just like any medicine, aripiprazole ER injection (Abilify Maintena™) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it reasonably well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Aripiprazole ER Injection Side Effects

Some side effects of aripiprazole ER injection are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
 
  • Extrapyramidal symptoms, such as:
    • Feelings of internal restlessness or an inability to sit still
    • Tremors
    • Involuntary, uncontrollable facial, tongue, or body movements
    • Severe muscle stiffness, tension, or contractions
    • Spasms of the neck muscles
 
  • An abnormal, forceful, or rapidly beating heart
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially upon rising from a seated or lying-down position
  • Weight gain
  • Signs of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, or feeling weak or hungry
  • Seizures
  • Throat tightness or difficulty swallowing
  • Anxiety
  • Unexplained fever or infection
  • Signs of a serious condition known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome, such as:
    • High fever
    • Rigid muscles
    • Shaking
    • Confusion
    • Increased sweating
    • Increased heart rate
    • Increased blood pressure
    • Muscle pain or weakness.
