The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when alprazolam is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Alcohol
Combining alcohol with alprazolam can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may occur. It is best to avoid alcohol while taking alprazolam (see Xanax and Alcohol).
Antidepressant Medications
Combining an antidepressant with alprazolam can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may occur. Additionally, many antidepressants can raise the level of alprazolam in your blood, which further increases your risk of developing side effects. Make sure to talk with your healthcare provider before taking alprazolam with an antidepressant, as you may need to be monitored more closely and may need a lower alprazolam dose.
Antipsychotic Medications
Combining an antipsychotic medication with alprazolam can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may occur. Make sure to talk with your healthcare provider before taking alprazolam with an antipsychotic medication.
Barbiturates
Combining a barbiturate with alprazolam can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may occur. Make sure to talk with your healthcare provider before taking alprazolam with a barbiturate.
Certain Antibiotics or Antifungals
Taking alprazolam with certain antibiotics or antifungals can raise the level of alprazolam in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. In general, alprazolam should not be taken with these medications (especially ketoconazole or itraconazole).
